We
need more and better rules to protect our future generation! Our
government has to protect our children from becoming addicts! Addicts
of food, alcohol and sex.
You
might think: Why is that? Everyone can make their own choice, can't
they? The choice whether they want to eat healthy food or not.
Whether drink alcohol or not. Whether having as much sex as they want
or not. Well, it is not as easy as it seems. We have become addicts
of all these things.
Our
boys and girls, the future of this country, are being brought up with
this kind of mentality. They are raised in the belief that eating
more, drinking heavier and partying harder is the right thing to do.
But
is it? Why do we think it is? Because companies make us believe it
is! Huge money is made by making us addicts of their products. If we
buy more crisps, more alcohol and more sex magazines, the companies
benefit from that. They make more money. The more we buy, the more
money they make. So they want us to consume as much as possible, by
making us addicts.
I
will illustrate the problem with the following three things:
- Food: Everyone knows the food industry abuses their powers. They add ingredients to make us eat more and more often and we become addicts. According to the NHS, a quarter of English people are obese. Likewise, 42 per cent of men and 32 per cent of women are overweight.
- Sex: The product sex has been promoted unnaturally excessive during the last years. Studies published in the magazine 'Psychologies' show that '”average child sees their first porn by the age of just 11 and between 60 and 90 per cent of under-16s have viewed hardcore online pornography”.
- Alcohol and soft drinks: Sugary and alcoholic drinks make us addicts. It is estimated that due to hangovers and drink-related illness 17 million working hours in the UK are lost each year.
The
companies are not concerned with these side effects. They don't care
that lots of people die of obesity, hepatic cirrhosis or AIDS. As
long as they make their money, they are satisfied.
But
we have to be aware of that. We have to establish better laws to
prevent obesity, binge drinking and sex addiction.
We
need to make sure that healthy food in school canteens is provided
and restrict the number of fast food restaurants. Only adults should
be allowed to watch porn on the Internet. And alcohol advertisement –
obvious or concealed – has to disappear from the TV screens.
If
we are not aware of overconsumption and don't give our children the
chance to be raised better, shame on us!
